Phone calls and text messages are great, but nothing beats being able to see your friends or family members right on your screen. Video chatting with your loved ones is a great way to stay connected when you find yourself feeling lonely, but how exactly is it done? For those who may not be the most tech savvy—the idea of setting up a video call can seem daunting. But rest assured, we’re here to help break it down step by step in a way that’s easy to understand.

Step 1: Choose which device you will be using. Whether you have a smartphone, tablet or computer, decide which device will be the most comfortable for you to use. A computer or tablet will provide a bigger screen, which can make it easier for you to see the person you’re talking to. Use whichever device you have the most experience using, any of the above will do just fine.

Step 2: Choose the right app. If you have an iPhone, iPad, or Apple computer, Facetime will be the best option for you. Facetime comes pre-downloaded on every Apple device. However, the catch here is the person you are contacting must be using an Apple product as well. If you or your loved one is using a different brand, there are plenty of fantastic apps to choose from in order to video chat. Check out Zoom, Skype, Google Hangouts, or WhatsApp—all of which are free to use.

Step 3: Once you download the app you would like to use and register your information, it’s time to connect with your loved one. Have their phone number on hand so you can plug it in, or if they are more tech savvy, have them connect with you so all you’ll have to do is answer.

Once you get the hang of it, you’ll see making a video call is a walk in the park. You’ll be able to easily connect with your friends and family and get to see them face to face….or screen to screen. Though nothing can beat in-person interaction, while we’re working to keep ourselves safe, video chatting is a fantastic option to stay connected.
