February is American Heart Month and the perfect time to focus on health. Heart disease is a common condition with seniors, with high blood pressure being the most occurring heart condition. Senior living communities can help lower risks of developing coronary heart disease with the many exercise classes they offer. In this blog, we will share some of those common exercise classes found at communities.
Aerobics
Aerobics classes are geared to get the blood and oxygen flowing to raise your heart rate through structured movements. These classes are also geared to provide a fun experience with the instructor leading the exercises often to music. Some of the classes you will find at communities are:
Tai Chi – This low- to moderate-intensity workout not only helps to clear one's mind and bring peace, but it also improves cardiovascular fitness by lowering blood pressure. There are many other benefits that seniors can enjoy such as improving sleep quality and hand-eye coordination to name a few.
Balance Training – Balance often declines with age and can be the cause for many seniors to have accidental falls, which could result in injury. Classes focusing on improving balance help with coordination and increase joint stability and reaction time.
Dance Cardio – Moving to music is always guaranteed to bring some fun and laughter. This exercise can break up the repetition of traditional workouts with music and not only put you in a better mood, but also gives you a chance to show off those dance moves!
Water Aerobics – Senior living communities that have a pool will most likely offer some of these water classes. This is a great way to strengthen muscles without putting a lot of strain on joints.
Outdoor Activities
Spending time outside improves one’s mental health and overall health through the many activities available outdoors. There are multiple classes offered at communities that one can take part in. Here are a few you will commonly find:
Walking – There are many benefits associated with walking for at least 30 minutes every day. Communities often supply classes to help get seniors moving. It’s a great way to improve cardiovascular health as well as increase energy levels while enjoying the beautiful grounds.
Pickleball - This sport has grown in popularity over the years, and many want to learn to play. Pickleball is a great exercise that may reduce chances of stroke and heart attacks. It also improves reflexes and balance and may bring out a competitive spirit.
Bocce – Bocce courts are popping up at senior living communities and for good reasons. The sport provides seniors with the opportunity to improve their flexibility by extending their arms and bending their bodies without causing too much strain.
Whether one chooses to take part in an indoor aerobics class or ventures outdoors, the benefits of moving and getting exercise will improve overall health. With these options available at most senior living communities, there are a lot more that seniors can join in and get moving!
