Deciding to Date Again

So, you’ve decided you’re ready to start dating again... Whether you’ve been widowed or divorced, deciding to date again later in life is a big step.

Before you jump in head first there are a few questions to ask yourself before reentering the dating pool.

Are you emotionally ready? Before dating, it is important to make sure you are emotionally ready to do so. If you are mourning the loss of a spouse or the end of a long relationship it is essential to take the time to grieve in the way you need before trying to give yourself to someone new. Unfortunately, there is no rule when it comes to getting over heartbreak, it could take months or it could take years, but don’t try to rush yourself. Give yourself time and space to heal and only start dating when you feel fully ready.

What do you want? Once you decide dating is something you are ready to do, decide what kind of relationship you are looking for. Do you want to get married again? Are you looking for a companion but do not want the commitment of marriage? Do you want to date casually? It is important to know your boundaries before dating that way you can be clear with what you want with a potential partner.

Where should you go to meet someone? Look at your interest and hobbies, are you involved in any clubs? Chances are you could find a great match and someone you have a lot in common with while doing things you enjoy. Living in a senior community is another great place to meet a potential companion. If you are involved in activities, or take community trips that could be a great place to spark up a conversation with someone you’re interested in. Another option for those who are more tech savvy is online dating. If online dating is the path you decide to take, be extra careful, not everyone has pure intentions and can try to scam you into believing they are someone they aren’t.

Are your kids ready? Be open and honest about dating again with your adult children, it could be difficult for them to see you with someone other than their parent. Especially if the parent has passed away, they could still be grieving and may not be fully prepared to see you with someone else. Give them the advantage of knowing you plan on dating before you start. The worst thing you can do is spring it on them as a surprise and force them to adjust when you already have someone new in your life.

Remember that ultimately your decision to date again is solely up to you. Be considerate of your adult children’s feelings but don’t allow it to stop you from doing what will make you happy. One of the major causes of mental and physical decline as we get older is due to isolation. Finding a companion can combat the feeling of loneliness and improve your mental health.
