spring_cleaning2Spring is in the air and unfortunately so are allergens, dust and pollen. Now is a great time to clean and refresh your home for the season.

Spring cleaning doesn’t have to be a daunting task, follow these few tips on easy spring cleaning and your living space will look like new in no time!

1. Organize any clutter.

The best way to kick off your spring cleaning is by putting away any clutter that may have piled up on the floor, chairs or countertops. Spend time going through each pile and put away items in their proper places and throw out anything you no longer need. Eliminating the clutter will make your space feel larger and will remove the risk of tripping over anything left on the floor.

2. Get rid of what you no longer use. Spring is the time to refresh and renew, so take the time to go through your closet and get rid of any clothes you no longer wear or haven’t touched over the last year. If you feel guilty about getting rid of perfectly good clothes, find a charity to donate them to! Do the same process for your shoes, books, decorations, toys, etc.

3. Go through your medicine cabinet. Cleaning up your medicine cabinet is a quick but also important item to check off your list. Toss any expired medications or ones that were never finished to eliminate your chances of accidentally taking the wrong one. Make sure you dispose of them in the proper way, look for community Prescription Drug Take Back Days or research locations that collect unused prescription medications.

4. Check smoke detectors and fire extinguishers. Making sure your smoke detectors and fire extinguishers are still in good working condition is something that often gets overlooked since they are rarely used. When you are doing spring cleaning, it’s a great time to check on both of these items to make sure the batteries in your smoke detector are still good and that your fire extinguisher hasn’t expired. Make sure to ask for help if checking your smoke detector is something that would be difficult to do on your own or if it is out of your reach.

5. Be prepared with the right tools. Many products are available to make cleaning easier for anyone who may be in a wheelchair, or have difficulty reaching up high or bending down. Invest in a Swiffer duster with an extended arm to reach the tops of shelves, ceiling fans, windowsills, etc. Invest in a vacuum with a retractable cord so that you can avoid having to bend down to tie it up. Don’t be afraid to ask for help on any projects you can’t do yourself, spring cleaning is important, but your safety is even more so.
